What Gopher Trapping Actually Involves
A gopher tunnel system isn't one straight line. It branches, it runs at different depths, and most of it is dead space the gopher isn't actively using right now. Trapping means finding the active runs, the ones with fresh soil movement, and setting a trap where the gopher will actually pass through it. Set a trap in the wrong spot, even a few feet off, and it just sits there doing nothing while the gopher keeps digging somewhere else.
Why Trap Placement Is the Hard Part
Reading a tunnel system takes practice. Fresh mounds tell you roughly where the activity is, but the actual working tunnel is underground, invisible, and easy to misjudge. We probe to find the main run, check the soil for how recently it was disturbed, and set traps where they'll actually intercept the gopher instead of guessing based on where the mound happens to be. That's the part experience actually changes, not the trap itself, where it goes.
Can You Trap a Gopher Yourself?
Sure, plenty of people try, and for a single, isolated mound, it sometimes works. A trap from the hardware store works the same way ours does. What's harder to get right without experience is reading the tunnel and knowing exactly where to set it, and that's usually the difference between a trap that catches something and one that sits empty for two weeks. If you've already tried and it didn't work, that's usually not the trap's fault.
